TO Open Doors

I am a little bit behind this week, its been a little crazy. An anniversary, work, multiple shoots and editing has pretty much been the order of the week. So my post about last weekend is well and truly overdue.

Saturday I did my first fun run since Run Melbourne 5km last winter. I was initially meant to do another 5km but the course was changed so I had the choice of 4km or 8km…of course I wanted to challenge myself and signed up for the 8km. I changed my mind pretty quickly after some really terrible training runs during the week and then seeing the calibre of runners entered in the 8km. Instead I pleaded to be switched to 4km which I am really happy I did in hindsight.

I was not particularly happy with my pace in the end – 27:35 I need to train more to get back to my race pace, unfortunately I am one of those people that running does not come easily to and I have to work really hard to get a good time. Next run is 5km on June 10 :P

Sunday we took advantage of TO Open Doors, and visited some building that are not normally open to public viewing. We tried to be sensible about what we would be able to achieve in a 5 hour period so only took in a few sites that were easily accessible by public transport (even with the Yonge-University-Spadina line out of action between Bloor and Union Station). Of course I again chose inappropriate footwear (comfortable boots but forgot to put on socks) so we had to cut the day a bit short since I couldn’t really walk and had a developed a blister within a blister on my heel.

I took my Canon 40D and kit lens (17-85mm f4.5-5.6) along which was a bit of a mistake – I missed shooting wide open and forgot that a lot of places would be low light which with the 40D stopping at ISO 1600 was a bit of a bummer. Next time its the 5D MkII and the 24-70mm L f2.8 lens!

In any case, here are some of the photos from the day

Bloor Hot Docs Cinema – Geoff and I are actually going to get membership here as we are both avid documentary watchers. While we were waiting for our tour of the projection room there were previews for documentaries about the Maldives and the man who was exiled before becoming President, the impact of wind farms on communities where turbine space has been rented by land owners, and the rise of Comic Con. Definitely will be having documentary “date nights”

Walking to get breakfast on College St

MaRs Discovery Building – saw some amazing developments in the Canadian Film Centre where brain waves are harnessed to control characters in games to complete set tasks.
I must admit again I was disappointed by the integration of old and new in this building. The facade is a beautiful historic building which has been gutted and replaced with glass.

Walking down University Avenue to the Canada Life Building

Canada Life Building – we could have taken the tour to the 17th floor which apparently offers extensive views of the downtown area, but couldn’t be bothered braving the long lines, that and Geoff and I are both scared of heights

Suprised a squirrel in a rubbish bin, then watched it roll around in the dirt. We are still amazed by every squirrel we see.

Front Street building after exiting Union station

The Design Exchange – originally the Toronto Stock Exchange Building. Loved this building so much that Geoff and I have made a pact that if we ever renew our wedding vows (and have buckets of money) that it would be on the old stock exchange floor.

We missed quite a few places that we will definitely be visiting next year, but it was well worth having a wander around these incredibly interesting buildings and listening to their history.

First long weekend of Summer

So this weekend is a long one here in Toronto, but inexplicably we are celebrating Queen Victoria’s birthday. I am so used to celebrating Queens Birthday in June for Queen Elizabeth II (you should know I am in fact a closet monarchist!)….so this is a little strange to me.

But…you get to blow up stuff for Victoria Day…who knew!! I LOVE fireworks, I love even more that here you can have rockets, which have been banned in NZ since I was 9 years old. I’m not sure we will actually buy fireworks this year, its money we don’t really need to spend and I am not sure where exactly we would let them off given we have no backyard. Maybe the middle of our gorgeous street?

So since the weather this weekend has been beyond AMAZING (27 degrees yesterday and 28 today) we decided to get out and about and put on our walking shoes. Except I decided that it was the perfect time to break in a new pair of summer sandals and a pair of jandals, so tonight my feet are pretty much killed!

Saturday we decided (I decided) that we should try a new brunch place not far from home (about a 2km walk), of course this would be the weekend that they decided to open at midday instead of 11am so we got to have an extended wander around Christie Pits. We ended up in the park (after eyeing off a LOT of houses) which was really interesting as you could feel the subway line running right under where we were sitting!

Breakfast was super yummy even though they didn’t have the breakfast pie I was lusting after…saaad face!

Saturday night we had friends over and ate cheese and pizza – this has not been good 8km funrun prep…

Sunday after I had ruined my feet and got massive blisters from my sparkly jandals, it was time to check out a new neighbourhood and head down to The Beaches. Of course pretty much everyone else had the exact same idea!

This is a tad busier than St Kilda!

Beach Volleyball lots marked out as far as the eye could see, each with their own little courtside party going on

It got a bit quieter where the shore was more rocky.

There were a lot of trees set just back from the beach, which is lovely shade from the sun

We walked back up through some pretty streets with a gorgeous park on our way to Queen East

Loved the light in this park!

Geoff makes friends with a squirrel…I am just thankful its not a possum!

Oh look! There’s a Pie Shack on Queen East…who knew!

You can read, play cards or boardgames…or EAT PIE!

So Geoff thinks we have walked about 10km this weekend so far and that his quota of walking for the year has been reached! I have learnt that the Canadian sun is much kinder to our skin than in NZ or Australia where we both burn in minutes and another reason I am loving Canada!

One more day off in which I will grant Geoff a rest day, and then back to work for me on Tuesday!

U of T wander which ends up in food truck stalking

Yesterday was such an amazing spring day, in fact much more like summer! It’s so much more humid here compared to Melbourne which is odd considering Melbourne is so close to the sea! In any case it was full sun in the morning and a balmy 23 degrees by lunchtime!
We decided to have brunch yesterday in order to skip the Mothers Day crowds today, and then have a wander down to the University of Toronto to check out some of the architecture.

While checking my phone over brunch I casually happened to notice that some food trucks were going to be at U of T – thanks goodness my brunch was small!
It is however somewhat embarrassing when you order from said food trucks and they remember you from the Street Food Block Party the week before….hmmm NZ accent you have not served me well…

Here are some photos from yesterday from our wander

OMG Food Trucks…who knew!

Pork Schnitzel from Gastronomo Vagabundo

I find these types of additions to buildings really hard to look at. I love the heritage style and to me it just jars to see glass and steel tacked onto them. I can’t understand why this is so prevalent here, there is talk of something very similar happening to the United Church on Bloor West (just down the road from us) and its really quite ugly. I wish that they could have something more in keeping with the period or something that complements the building more.

Next week sees me starting a contract job for a couple of months. It’s pretty close to home so I can walk in the morning and run home in the evening meaning I can eat more food from the food trucks!

My new project – Exposed I-III

Photography by Angela McConnell

When I first arrived in Toronto I did a couple of workshops hoping to meet like minded creatives and to get myself back on track with my photography after an extended break. I hadn’t really been shooting for about 4 months while we packed up our lives in Melbourne and waited on our visas to come to Toronto. At some point the immense stress and frustration, plus not having most of my computers or gear just sucked any sort of motivation out of me.

During one of these workshops, there was a critique of our websites and essentially how we were marketing ourselves. Of course since I absolutely love being the centre of attention, I blushed furiously, stammered and basically tore myself down since my website was far and away the worst on offer. At this point the guy running the workshop told me that it was really ironic that I shoot predominantly strong, confident individuals (burlesque and rollerderby) when I am lacking any self confidence. I had to agree with him, and it’s something I really need to work on.

But it got me thinking about the people I associate with in my photography and I wanted to explore a more vulnerable side to these people who do something which in my eyes is incredibly brave and that I would have immense trouble to achieve. This project aims to show that vulnerable side and expose the fact that although someone may appear outwardly confident and self-assured, often it is in fact a front.

Toronto Street Food Block Party

I read about the Street Food Block Party a couple of months back when we first got here, and made sure that I got tickets as soon as they went online since Geoff and I are all about the food! Man I was so not disappointed!
Some people I suggested this to were a little concerned that tickets were $20 and then food was extra, but when we took into consideration the amount we spent here against what we would normally spend at the Suzuki Night Markets back in Melbourne, there was definitely more bang for your buck here! Also worth taking into consideration is that there is a free shuttle bus to and from Broadview Station from the event at Evergreen Brick Works (again savings on taxi or petrol!)

Here are a few snaps of what we ate and brought home. Seriously the best advice I saw online was to take tupperware containers so you could eat later – we have a bit of a stash here at the moment and I am full to bursting!

Birds on a wire outside Broadview station

Evergreen Brickworks – waiting in line with about 300 other people before food time!

Interesting vista at Evergreen Brickworks

Geoff is stamped and legal!

First up – Lobster rolls with pickle and potato chips from Busters Sea Cove

The line for Gorilla Cheese was seriously long! Geoff was waiting for his lumberjack toasted cheese (i saved my half but apparently it was super good!)

Loooong lines 5 minutes in – 2 hours later they were twice as long!

Caplanskys Deli – I got the Smoked Meat Taco (Green Apple Radish Coleslaw, smoked meat and latke chips) forgot to take a photo before I ate it :(

Burgers from Roaming Buffalo – I got “The WHAT?!?” (Smooth Peanut Butter, burger and bacon jam)

“The WHAT?!?” Burger – Geoff isn’t a fan of peanut butter but I LOVE the salty and sweet thing that they are really into over here so totally up my alley

Gastronomo Vagabundo – Aussie chef from Melbourne who gave me crap for being a kiwi LOL
Fish Taco
Banana Fritter
Jasmine, Dark Chocolate and Mint Tea all for $10!

Banana Fritter and Ice Cream – the ice cream was DIVINE!

Geoff enjoys his banana fritter!

Cake in JAR!! OMG YES! Sullivan & Bleeker
I got the Cinnamon Toast and since I didn’t want to share when I got home I made Geoff get a Cookie Dough for himself. Share and Sweet does not work in this house!

Cinnamon Toast cake in a jar – how cute are these? This came home and is yet to be tackled!

We took a break outside since it was pumping inside….such a lovely day and area. Geoff says it reminds him of the Cotter Dam back in Canberra

Arty Farty

We didn’t break for long – Calamari Pita and Stout for Geoff. Calamari Pita from Blue Donkey

TEQUILA! Tromba Tequila

I dont mind if I do….mix me a drink kind sir!

Gorgeous cocktail! Look how it glows in the sun and my tummy! Tequila, Agave syrup, lime juice and grapefruit bitters! Seriously to die for!

Geoff waiting patiently for his pizza from Bonfire Catering

Brown Sugar Lemonade with excellent cute straw from Toronto Picnic Society.

More Brickworks buildings

Walking it off back home… I adore our street!

I also got cupcakes from The Cupcake Diner 6 for $15 BARGAIN! But that was my first stop and saved for home so no photos…
I definitely will be doing this again next year – it was so much fun :) Only downside is that its much smaller than the Night Markets and virtually no space for seating – I think there were 2 or 3 picnic tables and about 6 bar tables at best. We saw some people bringing portable chairs which was definitely the go so that will be on the list for next year!

More shots from wandering around Toronto

Now we don’t have a car, which we probably wont for some time due to the crazy expense that is Car Insurance here in Ontario, Geoff and I have been doing a lot more walking around. We originally thought that we lived approximately same distance away from the city as West Footscray is to Melbourne City (ie 13km or so). In actual fact we live a LOT closer – its only about 4km to the city centre from our apartment.
It seems to the both of us that the residential surburb areas here in Toronto start a lot closer to the city, they streets are very quiet and lined with trees which really makes it feel the city is a long way away.

So here are some more shots around our area The Annex and in an around College St, although we still haven’t made a proper trip into the University yet.

8 weeks in Toronto!

It’s our 8 week anniversary since we arrived in Toronto. We left Melbourne on a sunny 38 degree day and arrived in 2 degrees! Since it has been a very mild winter the coldest day we have experienced this year is -12 degrees which was ok suprisingly!

Here are some photos of Toronto from then end of Winter and start of Spring….roll on Summer I cant wait to see what this city has to offer!

Sakura Cherry Blossom Trees at High Park

Photography by Angela McConnell

Today I decided to take advantage of the warm, sunny and breezy (23 degrees before a windy front hit this afternoon), and check out the Sakura Cherry Blossom trees in full bloom at High Park.

It’s an easy ride on the subway from our house, but I probably wandered around the park for an hour or two taking in the gorgeous weather and fighting other photographers for prime vantage for shooting blossoms. The great thing is that the wind was picking up the blossoms and making a blossom snow which was so beautiful!

Shots from the Canon 40D – Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro lens

Cant go past a bit of B&W

Playing with lower shutter speeds for motion blur

Using a touch of sun for a milky cast over the image

Images taken on my Nokia Lumia 710 (because I ran out of battery AND memory card space…oops!)
Images process using Fhotoroom

I also got a 30 second video on my phone with the wind blowing the cherry blossoms into me, but cannot figure out how to upload it here :(

Hopefully more adventures to come this week, including a super exciting studio photography project! Stay tuned!
