Australian Body Art Awards

Photography by Angela McConnell
for
Jungle Jim Documentary Pictures

I had the pleasure to join the team at Jungle Jim Documentary Pictures a couple of weeks ago to shoot the Australian Body Art Awards held at the Daylesford Town Hall.

I was able to indulge my candid photography bug and shoot the works in progress during the day and then jump into the studio and shoot the finished products after the judging process.

Some candid shots of work in progress. The artists started around about 1pm and depending on their catagory, had approximately 6-7 hours to complete their artwork on the models. The models were amazing! Not only did they in some case have to stand in the same position for hours but they aren’t able to pee the whole time!
It was very interesting catching glimpses of the concept art for the pieces as well. In some cases it was very well planned out and others were using reference photography or illustration to design their finished pieces.

The studio shooting was pretty hardcore, although I tend to shoot fast, I am used to being able to take my time and if needs be talk to my models/clients about the direction we are heading in, consult reference pieces or just chat. No chatting at this shoot. This was shooting hard and fast – approximately 1-2 minutes per model with the aim to capture as much detail from the overall artwork.

Here is a selection of the studio shoot for the finished works. The divisions were split up into Doubles (painting in pairs), Special Effects and UV/Blacklight.

Gorelesque 2!

Photography by Angela McConnell

Friday August 13th brought us the return of Gorelesque, the brainchild of Vesper White and Miss Nic which was held at Red Bennies in Chapel St.

The scene was set with ghoulish go-go girls (the lovely Lux St Sin and Bec) and then opened with a fantastic short film (I will link to it when it is online – it really is quite an awesome watch) with the Gorelesque cast taking on some zombies…

Vesper opened the show with her twist on Frankenstein’s monster (she’s ALIVE!!), and can I just say I LOVE STROBE!

Next up was Betty Blood – taking care of some business..

Then Rosy Rabbit incarnated as Kali the Indian Goddess of Time and Change (who also likes a bit of slaying in her spare time)

Foxtrot India showed a knack for science as Marie Curie (and an awesome skin care regime)

Rod Lara tried not to vomit when conducting some Enya

Tank got the job done with some staples (this REALLY SCARED me!)

La Viola Vixen kept suprising us with Dalmations that just kept popping up everywhere

Anton De Lorde and Madame Natalia reminded us that fame comes with a price

AND

Miss Nic took a bite out of a heart…. in a Twin Peaks inspired act…..BUT SHE TOOK A BITE OUT OF A HEART

>

Another Gorlesque Production is scheduled for Halloween so keep an eye out on their Facebook page for details.

Atrocity Unbound

Photography by Angela McConnell

Atrocity Unbound was the follow up performance to Atrocity Unleashed which I blogged about a while ago. It further explored the themes of betrayal, manipulation and was as dark and confronting as the initial season of Unleashed.
Veritas, Atrocitas and Forma again graced the Burlesque Bar stage, and showed some very interesting developement in their characters. Forma is not the innocent beauty we once thought and Atrocitas lets us see the humanity behind the horror.

Unbound will be followed up by Atrocity Awakening which will see new characters joining the fray

Some shots from Unbound

For information about the upcoming Atrocity Awakening and to buy tickets, visit the Atrocity website

Clairy Baby Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes – the fundraiser

Photography by Angela McConnell

“Drawing influence from Etta James, Tina Turner, The Shirelles and Sister Rosetta Tharpe; Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes set their own scene – sweaty, gritty dancehall 1964, big make-up and even bigger hair, late night dirty dancing, making out in the car park, cigarettes hidden in beehives, sinful shake n’ grind, high gloves and tight skirts, shark skins, slick backs and wild wild women.” – Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes Myspace

AND they are supporting The Cat Empire on their upcoming national tour in August! I had the pleasure of shooting CBBTBR (it just easier yeah and I type enough at work!) for their fundraiser event just a couple of weeks ago. The place was packed, swing dancing, spirits sipped out of jam jars, it really did live up to the sweaty, gritty dancehall picture painted. The music was pretty damn good too!

Enough of my crap blogging…more pictures!
